Newport News, Virginia Celebrates Jamestown 2007
Presented by Newport News Tourism Development Office

Why is Newport News celebrating Jamestown 2007? Well, it’s all in a name! Our name is believed to have come from Captain Christopher Newport, commander of the three ship English fleet that originally landed at Jamestown in 1607. Here’s a sample itinerary for the celebration:

DAY ONE

Arrive at the Virginia Living Museum and view the special exhibits, Colonial Garden Display, Jamestown’s Wilderness: Changing the Chesapeake and planetarium production, “Steering by the Stars” (March 31 – November 25, 2007).

Your choice for dinner either at the Crab Shack, Deer Run Grille, The Train Station, or other creative restaurants in Newport News.

DAY TWO

Depart for Jamestown Settlement and explore 17th-century Virginia life. Learn about America’s first permanent English colony, the history and culture of African-Americans and Virginia Indians. Time on your own for lunch and shopping.

Enjoy a charming dinner at the Boxwood Inn and meet Captain Christopher Newport, the seaman placed in “sole charge and command of all the captains, soldiers, and mariners…” of the 1607 Jamestown Expedition.

DAY THREE

Complete your Jamestown 2007 adventure with a tour of The Mariners’ Museum, one of the largest comprehensive maritime history museums in the world. Don’t miss seeing Captain John Smith’s Map of the Chesapeake Bay! Walk over to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center and take in its special exhibit, Eastern Light, photographs of the Eastern Shore and region surrounding the Chesapeake Bay (April 7-June 3, 2007).

Special Jamestown exhibits at attractions listed are subject to change.
